Families

One mat for every kind of family

Some families have lived here for years and some arrived last month. The classes work for both.

  • A hand holding a folded belt with two stripes of tape on it

    Moving soon?

Tell us when you arrive and, if you know, when you expect to leave. We place new students by age and belt, write down the belt and stripes a student has reached on a page to hand to the next school, and can talk about a pause for a deployment or a move.

  • Bare feet in a stance on a dark mat in soft window light

    Winter evenings

Weekday classes start after school and end by 8:15, and Saturday classes run in the morning. Doors open fifteen minutes before each class so families can get out of their boots and onto the bench.

  • Children in white uniforms bowing at the start of a class

    Brothers, sisters and parents

Brothers and sisters can share a class by age, and the Friday family class puts a parent and a child on the mat together. Everyone else watches from the bench.

Questions

What families ask first

How old does a student have to be?

Students can join from age 5. First belts is for ages 5 to 7, the kids' class for ages 8 to 12, and teens and adults train together. A student's age sets their group, and their belt sets their place in it.

Can I watch a class?

Yes. Parents and family can watch any class from the bench by the window. We ask for quiet during belt tests, no flash photos, and that younger brothers and sisters stay with an adult.

What do I wear to a first class?

A plain t-shirt and loose trousers are fine, and we lend a uniform for that visit. No jewelry, hair tied back, nails short and shoes off at the mat.

What is a class like?

Students line up by belt, bow in and warm up. Then they work on stances and kicks, a form, and partner drills with pads. Classes end with a bow out. Sparring starts with light contact in gear, and only in the classes for older students.

Can parents and children train together?

On Fridays, yes: the family class has a parent and a child, or two brothers and sisters, on the mat together. The other classes are split by age.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. Every fitness level starts here, and stretching is part of every warm-up.
